About me

My name is Lea (pronounced “Lee”), and I make things.

I’ve been a creator all my life. Painting, writing, music, baking, you name it. And as a doctor of psychology and former therapist, I’ve spent my entire adult life reflecting on what it means to be fulfilled — to live the most authentic and joyful life I possibly can.

I created this space because I believe the world is better with art.

Art is my chosen language of expression, connection, and meaning. I want you to see it. And I want to see yours.

Here, you’ll find my writing, some visual arts, and a shop where you can take home whatever calls to you. I hope you enjoy it.

So what is leamadethis?

leamadethis is a small business, run locally out of Santa Monica, CA by me (Lea Hughes). It’s the home of everything I make, from stickers to handcrafted accessories to short stories.

Sometimes you’ll find me at local craft fairs. Sometimes, you’ll see my name pop up in online writing competitions. Usually, you’ll find me here.

At the end of the day, leamadethis is the label I slap onto whatever my little crafty heart brings to life ☀️

FAQs

Yes, but maybe not in the way you think. I’ve published several articles in academic journals, and I’ve written chapters for books on the Psychology of popular media franchises (like the Psychology of Final Fantasy, edited by Anthony Bean). However, none of my novels are published — yet.

Are you published?

Yes! Infrequently, and I tend to be pretty choosy about them. (I generally only work on things that bring me joy). But if you’re interested in a commission, reach out!

Do you do commissions?

Not currently, no. I work in the videogame industry in Insights (which involves things like research, analytics, and audience strategy). I won’t lie, it’s an awesome job and I’m grateful for it every day. My art isn’t my primary income, but it has been at various points in my life.

Are you a full-time artist?

How can I stay in touch?

Join the mailing list, or join our discord! We’ll be happy to have you.

Do you use ChatGPT or other forms of AI in your writing?

None of my writing has ever been generated using AI. Ever. That’s a hard line I draw. And before you ask — yes, I have always been a frequent user of emdashes.
